North Idaho Linux Users Group Meeting

Come join us at the North Idaho Linux Users Group Technical Session on April 28, 2012 starting at 1pm. Our meetings typically run between three and four hours. So if you can't show up right at 1pm, don't fret. If you have a tower, we have Power, Monitors, Mice, Keyboards, and Speakers. If you have a laptop, we recommend you bring your power supply. For network connectivity we have both wired and wireless networks available.

During these sessions we install and update various flavors of the Linux operating system and attempt to answer questions.

An example of scare-ware we pull off of computers

Recently, we had a computer come into the office with the following scare-ware running claiming that the hard drive was going to imminently fail. After successfully backing up the data that was on the drive we ran the drive manufacturers diagnostics against it. The drive passed both the quick and extended tests.

Once it was determined that the drive itself was good, our General Maintenance program removed the scare-ware without a loss of data.

If something like this shows up on your computer, give us a call.

Referral Program at F1 for HELP

We have a referral program at F1 for HELP! Refer a friend and receive $10 off of the labor on your next repair. In order to qualify for the $10 discount, your name must be mentioned by the person you refer.

550,000-strong army of Mac zombies spreads across world - The Register

An article from The Register is worth reading if you are one of the faithful. Even though the Mac OS X software is *NIX based, that doesn't mean that you can let your defenses down. This attack is through the Oracle Java software that is found on many computers that are connected to the internet.

If your computer is acting strange, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

New password-snatching Mac Trojan spreading in the wild - The Register

An article from The Register is worth reading. Because of it's *NIX background, Mac OS X is more resilient to virus and trojan's than Windows. That doesn't mean that you should let your guard down though.

What makes this particularly interesting is the last method of infection. The last method it uses to try and install itself is a fake security certificate that most people would simply accept because that is what they are trained to do. This is social engineering at it's best.

Scheduled TeamViewer Server Maintenance

Linux talent shortage drives up salaries

An article from The Register validates what I have been saying for many years. The ability to work with Linux and Open Source software is becoming more of an asset as more and more companies are realizing the cost benefits of deploying a Linux based server solution.

If you are interested in finding out if a Linux based server would be a good fit for your business, give us a call!
